Most dangerous occupations in America

USA Today has an impressive list of the most dangerous jobs in America. This list was created by looking at the statistical frequency rate and how devastating the damages typically are. According to the numbers provided, the single most dangerous job is that of log workers. In 2016 the numbers of fatalities averaged 135 per 100,000 workers. This means that 1 of every 1000 loggers will die on the job due to the risks associated with their work. Keep in mind, this is a worst-case scenario, other injuries, while still devastating, are more likely to occur. Let’s look at a job that is more common here in Utah, construction workers.

Injuries that happen to construction workers

Construction workers are still on the list, ranking number 13 of 25. According to this article, the most common injuries are caused by falls, slips, trips, and being struck by objects. The most common injury type that will befall a construction worker is damage to their hands. Back injuries closely follow this. The total number of construction laborers injured totals around 25,000 times.

What can be done to keep construction sites safe?

The starting point for any construction company is to follow and meet OSHA Standards. As you may imagine, there is an extensive list of rules and regulations designed to help minimize the frequency of workplace accidents. We won’t write out the whole list here, but we want to bring a couple of key items to light. One primarily is “Make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment and properly maintain this equipment.” Another regulation is as follows, “Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules, and regulations issued under the OSH Act.”

Contact a local injury attorney if you or a loved one has been injured while on a construction site or while visiting a place under construction. Request a case review to understand better your case and where you stand in the eyes of the law.
