Little Known Facts About Motorcycle Accidents

Even though we are a few months away from seeing motorcycles on the road here in Utah, it is always a good time to talk about safety.  Most of us realize that riding a motorcycle is generally more dangerous than driving a passenger vehicle.  However, we wanted to present some little-known facts and statistics about motorcycle crashes that may bring other concerns to light.  Before you read this article and think to yourself, “great another law firm preaching safety” please keep one thing in mind.  To us, even if reading this article helps prevent one accident, or even saves a life it is well worth our time to create this content for our readers.

Did you know that according to the Utah Highway Safety Patrol roughly 94% of all traffic accidents are due to human choice or error of some kind?  They go on to explain that the top 5 reasons for accident deaths include speeding, unrestrained occupants, drunk drivers, failing to yield, and distracted drivers.  The potential damage to motorcyclists is larger than most because they do not have the safety of a seatbelt or a giant steel cage around their body, known as a vehicle.

Motorcycles only make up for about 3-4 percent of all registered vehicles.  When you think about it seeing a motorcycle on the road is not a relatively common occurrence.  This means that many drivers are not thinking about them, and therefore not looking for them while they drive.  Despite their small representation, bikers make up around 15% of all reported traffic deaths each and every year.

Motorcycle deaths affect a high percentage of males.  In fact, 90 percent of all deaths were males.</font color>
